Jonagold

Moretz - combine two of this country's best apples (Jonathan and Golden Delicious) and you get terrific blend of tart and sweet. Developed in NY, DOB 1968

DW - super juicy. Good mild flavor, all sweet, a little earthy / smokey. Probably amazing for salads.

CW - that ones squirty. Little bit crisp with tons of juice. Good flavor.

Winter Banana

Moretz - The Goldilocks apple. Not too sweet, not too tart. Very interesting crisp texture and a mild flavor. Originated in Indiana during the centennial.

DW - super mild. Textured skin, medium all around. Not bad, just kinda blah.

CW - kind of little bit of creaminess. Like weird banana texture. I don't taste much of anything.

Senator

Moretz - originated in Arkansas in the early 1800's. A unique apple with Jonathan like flavor. Red and round and good size. This is our best pie apple and a treat for in hand eating. Limited supply.

DW - whew, super gala strong. Soft skin, crispy apple, russet texture in places.

CW - Peary. But good. Easy to eat, I like the crunch and juiciness.

Virginia Gold

Moretz - A very nice apple that is firm and slightly tart. Makes good cooked apples and pies. Not bad for out of hand eating either. DW- that's good. Crisp, firm, juicy sweet, hint of tart. Super yummy.

CW- that's really good.

Pound Pippin

Moretz - Noted for its size and cooking ability. This big apple is a good butter maker and baker. Nice tart flavor.

DW - This was the smallest one I could get. Tastes like a lemon apple. Like. A lemon. Yep. Super crisp!

CW - That's some dry tartness. And I'm probably gonna spit it out.

Macintosh

Moretz - The great northern born apple that is slightly tart and full of flavor. Makes great sauce too. In the south it tends not to color up as well since it ripens before cooler nights begin. DW - The perfect apple. Sweet, tart, 10 different flavors in each bite.

CW - oh that's good. Very familiar.

Sweet Sixteen

Moretz - A new variety from the Minessota breeding program. Terrific complex taste with a butterscotch aftertaste. This one will work the taste buds.

DW - Like a gala, but milder and not as saccharine. Good with cheddar!

CW - Got a nice crunch, very juicy. Not too sweet not too tart, I like it!

Red Field

Moretz - with a pink bloom on the skin and red colored flesh this is an unusual apple indeed. Moderate tartness makes this a fine cooker and eater for the tart lover. DW - Wow. Stunning. It's like there Are little stars all over the outside on this deep red. And the inside is like a dyed apple, stunning pink gradients. Woof. Not a good flavor. Like dirt with marker. Yikes. The texture is like a medium steak, which is not a compliment.

CW - the color's gorgeous even the outside its so pretty. Ugh. No. Ugh. Tastes like a bad orange, it's mealy and I don't wanna chew it anymore. Ptooie. (We tried another one) nope. That ones sandy and dry. No thank you.

Bramley Seedling

Moretz - A large tart apple that has a good flavor and is a premiere baker and butter maker. Not a bad looker either.

DW - super tart! But delish. Really neat candy flavors on the back end.

CW - tartness hits the front of my mouth not my jaw, totally bearable and I like it! Not that neck area tart. I really like the flavor.

Roxbury Russet

Moretz - Dating back to the 1600's this one of the oldest American apples. Jefferson prized it for both an eating and a cider apple. About 6% alcohol for hard cider. Not pretty by today's standard but the history makes it worth trying.

DW - Mmm, sweet, thicker skin, no tart. Russet skin is a little earthy / coppery, but goes nice with the sweet / flowery tastes. Actually like it a good bit!

CW - Skin like a pear, just kinda watery.

Senshu

Moretz - A small to medium sized apple that originated in Japan. It provides early Fuji flavor.

DW - Crisp and fresh like a Honeycrisp, mild sweet flavors. No tart.

CW - nice juicy bite! I like that. Mmm. Watery and crisp!

Rhode Island Greening

Moretz - A very interesting apple as it naturally waxes itself. very tart this is a great early Granny to use.-

DW - Firm! Tart! Sour! Super firm, skin is very tart, chewy. Not very juicy.

CW - it's like if you put fabric in your mouth.

Honeycrisp

Moretz - One of the newer must try varieties. Sweet and crisp with a good flavor has made this one a modern favorite.

DW - reminds me of a Gala, but milder and obvs honey flavored.

CW - sweet! This is pretty good!

Northwest Greening

Moretz - DOB 1872 Wisconsin, this variety develops a waxy skin after harvest which has health benefits. On the tart to sour side.

DW - oh nice! Firm but not too crisp, nice full sharp flavor, good with mild cheese. Wanted to crunch it more to get more juice out.

CW - hard and chewy. Nice level of tart.

Ozark Gold

Moretz - A good crisp moderately sweet eating apple with slightly golden flavoring. Limited supply.

DW - weird. Super dry like a sauv blanc. Lots of juice. Earthy aftertaste.

CW - soft crunch. Tastes dry, even though it's juicy.

Cortland

Moretz - Large dark red apple that is top choice for salads as the flesh is very slow to brown and has a very fine grain. McIntosh and Ben Davis are its parents. Not a widely grown apple and supplies are usually limited.

DW - zingy! Really nice crunch. Tart like a Mac, crispy the whole time.

CW - extra crunchy! Little tart. Skin lasts a little long. Pretty to look at!

Wolf River

Moretz - large green with red stripes, sometimes blushed on the sunny side. Tart flavor and a heritage favorite for thick sauces and of course butter. Discovered in Wisconsin in 1881.

DW - medium thick skin, slightly russety, fun crunch, medium flavor all around. Good apple!

CW - it's alright. Yeah, pretty good.

Liberty

Moretz - A small to medium sized disease resistant cultivar that has very flavorful crispy-crunch white flesh with a moderate Mcintosh flavor. From New York 1978.

DW - crisp. Super crisp, nicely tart, kinda nutty on the end. Tastes like a Macintosh but milder and a lot crisper.

CW - crisp and juicy. Tastes young and little.

Gala

Moretz - This New Zealand born variety has taken the world by storm. Sweet/tart with a good flavor and attractive coloring when exposed to good sun have made this one a must have.

DW - Familiar flavor by now, tastes kind of like a melon. Of course Moretz's is like the best gala ever, pretty and perfect.

CW - that has a nice crunch! Little long to chew, whatever.
