Jonamac

Moretz - A combination of two of our country's finest, Jonathan and Macintosh. Firmer than Macs with more snap.

DW - Definitely one of my favorites. So many awesome flavors, tart, sweet, good crunch, I could eat 10 at a time. Gorgeous colors and small size make me want to grab it.

CW - pretty good! Medium on all factors.

Green Pippin

Moretz - Moderately tart good flavored apple that can be eaten out of hand or make terrific sauces. Does well as an early pie apple too. Chance seedling first discovered in Indiana 1867.

DW - firm. Not very crisp. Very mild, chewy skin. Little hint of tart.

CW - doesn't taste like much. I get grass at the end.

Zesty Zee

Moretz - A very nice apple for white sauce or slightly tart munching. If you missed Lodi or Transparent earlier, you better get this one. It's also an exclusive to our orchard. Parents are Transparent x ? DOB Watauga county NC 1989

DW - sweet with low tart. Fresh like iceberg lettuce. Medium skin. Juicy!

CW - good fun fruit flavor smell. Easy to bite. First taste I got was dimatapp cold medicine! But super nice. Very good after taste.

Rusty Coat

Moretz - An antique apple that is very sweet. Rough skin and fairly fast oxidation had this apple almost extinct. Worth saving and savoring.

DW - waited a week to eat, thick skin, smells good. No tart, mild flavor. Not so good as an eating apple. Bad after taste.

CW - hint of tropical smell.

Summer Rambo

Moretz - date of birth 1500s France. The second oldest western known variety and a good one for both eating and cooking. Slightly tart. You can now go medieval in a good way.

DW - oooo that is weird. Slight thick skin, crisp! Weird tart to it, like a lemon plus sourdough.

CW - Weird tart. The tart rolls around a bit, and then ends with dirt.

Old Timey Spice

Moretz - as the name implies, it is a moderate to slightly tart apple with a hint of spice in the flavor. Good to cook pies, but I enjoy eating this one as the after flavor on my lips reminds me of a Merlot.

DW - thick skin, tastes like fall, funny. Tastes like apple butter, with a bit of cinnamon.

CW - love the smell. A little mealy.  Not bad!

Chehalis

Moretz - a fairly new variety that has a sweet to slightly tart disposition. They are great for out of hand eating. Decent cooker and they really shine in the juicer to sweeten up the other ingredients.

DW - sweet, soft but not mealy. Tastes just like a pear. Less ripe one was simple and tart.

CW - tastes just like a pear!

Silken

Moretz - Another of the newer clan on the scene. Translucent skin color reminds one of transparent, but oh my this is a flavorful sweet eating apple. Be among the first to try this one. Limited supply.

DW - Anti tart. Crisp, thin skin, full but mild flavor. Taste like a strong flower smell.

CW - Nice crunch. Sat in my mouth with no flavor.

Maidens Blush

Moretz - medium sized green with a beautiful blush when exposed to the sun. Slightly tart and is the best for early season drying. Makes sauces butters and even pies. DOB 1817 New Jersey. Definitely a heritage variety. DW - Pretty name. Not so much on the taste. Mealy, soft, earthy, carrots. Made a face.

CW - (sniffing it) It's almost putting me somewhere, not quite my grandmas house. Mmmmm. (Biting) ugh, like mush. Flavors fine.

Collimar

Moretz - A big wonderfully tart (Granny Smith tart) that is the very best for making thick apple butter. In 20 minutes time you can have knife slicing butter. Not very pretty, but oh my at the butter. Discovered in New England in the early 1800s. DW- Mild, crisp bite, not mealy at all. Lightly tart, easy to eat. Like a super mild Granny Smith. Probably good for salads if I ate those.

CW - Clean watery crunch. Good in a salad.

Pristine

Not from Moretz, this teeny guy is very soft and almost glowing. Lisa and Mark picked it up at Blueberry Thrill farm in Gibsonville. Fairly tart, but also nice and floral sweet. Maggie really liked it, great kid snack size.

Yellow / Early Transparents

Moretz's description: This variety is tops for making sauce or country apples early in the season. Small in size and thinned skin. Easiest to slice and cook and then run through food mill to remove skins. From Russia - 1870 DW: Tart. Tart. Tart. Like a warhead sour candy, without the candy part. Super great with stinky cheese.

CW: I wasn't prepared for that. I can't finish this.
