Sekai Ichi

Moretz - Meaning worlds #1. In Japanese culture the sharing of an apple is an act of friendship. This one is prized for the ability to share with many. Japan is one of the few places that have apple vending machines. DOB 1974

DW - Ooo that's good. Medium crisp, Light skin, gorgeous to look at, very mild candy flavor.

CW - It's like watery pear.

Arkansas Black

Moretz - When first picked it may be possible to "brain a bear" with this one. Very hard and tart whose flavor excels after a few months in storage. Also a very long keeping apple remaining into next June in cellar  storage.

DW - another favorite. Nice and crisp, almost hard, sooooo pretty and dark dark red. Mild Macintosh flavor, and a little bit like a fizzy drink. Eleventeen stars.

CW - powdery and very tart.

Blushing Gold

Moretz - A cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious from Illinois. Tart with a very nice flavor that holds its shape makes this one a great pie choice.

DW - Apricot. Totally apricot. Good, crisp skin and kinda soft flesh.

CW - smells like paint. Kinda like a pear, nice flavor.

King Lucious

Moretz - A large pretty apple that has very dedicated followers and for good reason. Originated in Hendersonville NC 1930

DW - like a cotton candy melon. Super juicy and yummy. Very very tasty, no tart, skins a little earthy.

CW - tastes like cheese kinda. Oh my. Or, the produce department, some sort of greeny leaf type deal. Now I think cilantro.

Black Oxford

Moretz - Hard and usually sweet with a good flavor. This rough skin apple doesn't win award for looks, but is one of our best sellers for all those adventurous enough enough to give it a try. DOB Maine 1790

DW - holy smokes. Gigantic flavor. Tart and thick and crisp. Skin tastes good, it's like 10 apples condensed into one.

CW - wince. It's like eating a Manila folder with apple in it. It's like apple powder in a folder. I don't care for it.

Prairie Spy

Moretz - A very firm, moderately tart apple which can be used for pies and crisps. Not the most colorful in the world but is not too bad a looker.

DW - softer, but we did wait 2 weeks on this one. Mild and pleasant, like a soft easy gala.

CW - soft, not a Ton of flavor.

Yoko

Moretz - Crisp, sweet and a good flavor make this little known variety well worth trying. It's biggest detractor is that it's usually not a very pretty apple. With russet most years and just a red blushes side this one does not win any beauty contests.

DW - kinda buttery! Neat! Really good, sweet, not tart. Medium crisp easy to eat.

CW - I like this apple. It's uh, not in your face, it's just kinda nice.

Golden Delicious

Moretz - A standard by which many apples are judged. Good for anything, eat, cook, bake, pies and used on the greener side for sauté.

DW - Yummy surprisingly. Vastly different from store variety. Crisp, sweet, not saccharine, and not gigantic.

CW - I'm don't really want one. Yeah I do like that.

Double Red Delicious

Moretz - one of over 300 varieties of this cultivar that has a lot of flavor. Not quite as colored, but red delicious was over bred for looks and keeps. This one reminds us why it was worth it in the first place!

DW - Still don't like these. Earth and heavy skin flavor with some simple sweetness. Crisp though! Very fresh.

Jumbo

Moretz - These apples can sometimes weigh up to 2 lbs each. Tart thick cooker good for butter. A Stark Brothers introduction, will not win any beauty contests. Also known as the "Adam and Eve" apple.

DW - oh interesting. Super crisp. Thin skin, mild flavor, but the flavor that is there is tart like citrus. Kinda fun. Getting weird secondary flavors that I can't place.

CW - pretty depth of color on the skin. Ugh. I don't like it. A lot going on in there.

Northern Spy

Moretz - the crisp tender juicy flesh lends itself to many uses. Nice tart flavor with a mild aftertaste. DOB 1800 NY.

DW - Oh neato. Yellow flesh, fun outside colors, sneaky flavor (GET IT). Sweet with an aftertaste of tart and floral.

CW - smells good. Mhmm caramel. Tastes a little like medicine. Dissolves nicely.

Macoun

Moretz - A cross between Jersey Black and Macintosh that is considered a gourmet variety. Nice coloration with white snappy flesh makes this a distinct apple. Excellent Mac flavor.

DW - Super good, Super crisp. Floral and sweet and mild. Great on a fall afternoon. Very pretty inside and out.

Yellow Newtown Pippin

Moretz - slightly tart and crisp with a terrific aftertaste. This variety was used on English sailing ships. DOB 1666 NY. Enjoy a bite of history!

DW - oh. Hello. Crazy good. Yellowish flesh, super crisp. Flavor like a Macintosh plus sweet tarts. Easy to eat and fun to give to Mags.

Vartimin Lightning

Moretz - on the Vartimin Farm stood a good cooking apple until lightning struck splitting the tree to the ground. What reemerged was a good eating apple. Nature is fascinating!

DW - Uh. Smoky? Yeah kinda. Like it got lightly grilled, but a big ole flower taste. Mildly crisp, Softer flesh, good change of pace from all the other sweet / tart apples.

Red Gold

Moretz - A cross of red and gold Delicious that takes some of the best flavor from both. Usually not a big apple in size but makes up for it in taste.

DW - So pretty. Tastes like red and golden delicious combined. Yeah not very good. Pretty blah and super mild.

Criterion

Moretz - a cross of red and Golden Delicious and Winter Banana gives this apple a combo delicious flavor with crunch. Very versatile in its uses, limited supply.

DW - Like a golden Delicious with a bit of earth flavor. Somewhat crisp, thin skin. Not my favorite.

Shizuka

Moretz - Remade Mutsu that ripens slightly earlier. Has more tartness and has more firmness as well as less physiological disorders less Mutsu. DW - strange. Sweet, but licorice. Like strong licorice. Cathy is gonna hate this one.

CW - smells like crazy! I like it a lot. A little bit mealy, but I like the flavor!

Geneva

Moretz - An excellent cooker with moderate tartness. Great for sauce and not a bad eater either. Named for Geneva NY.

DW - Super pear. Almost exactly like a d'anjou. Bet this would be super good with stinky cheese. Medium thick skin.

CW - blah. Not inedible, just blah.

Yellow Bell Flower

Moretz - Discovered in NJ in 1742. A very crisp apple with lots of flavor and many uses. And it is a long keeping apple. The skin is fairly thick and the eating quality is better when peeled. DW - floral sweet with a good tart. Pretty apple too. Good medium crunch and firm.

CW - one of those fabric-y ones. I don't taste a lot of flavor difference in all these apples honey.

Royal Limbertwig

Moretz - An unsightly apple that is tart and juicy when first picked but develops a deep old fashion flavor during storage. My favorite at Christmas. Rough skin with slightly yellow flesh, this apple cooks well. DOB VA 1700s.

DW - thick skin, tart like a Granny Smith but way more mild and pleasant. Really like it. Also one of the best names for sure.

CW - (winces) fake tropical flavor at first. Hm. Skins thick but not hard to chew.
